Course description

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, so young people need to understand what it is and how it might affect them. But what do you need to know to help them learn what AI systems can do and make informed decisions about how they can ethically take advantage of this technology?

In this three-module course from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, you'll learn about different types of available AI tools, and how they may affect the world of work and learning. You'll find out about the types of problems that AI tools can help to solve, try some out for yourself, and consider how you can discuss the risks, opportunities, and ethical considerations surrounding AI technology with young learners.

This course is part of Experience AI, a free educational programme developed in collaboration by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind. Experience AI provides cutting-edge resources on AI and machine learning for teachers and their students aged 11-14.

Is this course for me?

This course is designed for anyone who helps educate young people, whether as a teacher or in an non-formal role such as a parent or club volunteer.

Learning objectives

By the end of these three modules, you should be able to:

  • Explain the relationships between data, AI (artificial intelligence), and ML (machine learning)

  • Explore different approaches to teaching about AI to support the development of young people’s knowledge and understanding of AI

  • Examine the types of problems AI can solve

  • Describe the capabilities and limitations of large language models (LLMs), generative adversarial networks (GANs), and generative AI tools

  • Discuss the applications of generative AI across various domains

  • Discuss the ethical issues surrounding ML and AI, including strategies for being a responsible user
